Senior Optical Engineer

10x is seeking an outstanding individual to join its growing Engineering and Product Development team in developing new technologies, devices and instrumentation for breakthrough next generation sequencing (NGS) applications.

The Senior Optical Engineer will play a key role in the development of optical systems for the company’s next generation of research instruments. This individual will spend full-time working as an instrumentation-level optics engineer on development projects and provide technical guidance to other engineers in supporting the optical architectures. As a key member of a dynamic multidisciplinary project team, the successful candidate will be expected to understand system-level function, performance & requirements, and help to create world-class bioanalytical instruments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Optical design of lab and engineering prototypes for various microscopy imaging techniques and applications, made of catalog and custom components. 
  • Producing optomechanical concepts and working with the engineering team to design, detail, and validate components for optical sensing, microscopy, and optofluidics. 
  • Assembly, alignment, integration, and maintenance of optomechanical modules that include LED and laser uniform and structured illumination, sample focusing and scanning, image acquisition, and various optical sensing. 
  • Support integration of complex systems involving optics, electronics, software, firmware, microfluidics, and mechanical sub-assemblies. 
  • Running a wide range of vendor and in-house developed software to configure, control, tune, and operate optical and optomechanical devices and assemblies. 
  • Working with optics manufacturers and distributors to assess, compare, select, customize, order, inspect, and evaluate individual components, modules, and instruments.

 Required skills

  • Ph.D. in optics or closely related field with focus on instrumentation development; or M.S. in optics or optical engineering with at least 3 years of industrial experience. 
  • Building custom optical setups or heavily modifying commercial instruments. 
  • Familiarity with catalog optics, optomechanics, and basic optics lab devices and tools. 
  • Detailed understanding of one or more optical detection or analysis techniques. 
  • Familiarity with at least some of the following applications:
    • Microscopy (brightfield, darkfield, epi-fluorescence, confocal). 
    • Spectroscopy (absorbance, fluorescence, Raman). 
    • Flow cytometry and / or cell sorting. 
    • Optofluidics and microfluidic devices. 
    • Single molecule or single particle detection.
  • Experience with some of the following materials:
    • Fluorescent dye molecules or proteins. 
    • Colloidal micro- and nanoparticles. 
    • Dye-labeled biomolecules. 
    • Quantum dots or polymer dots.
  • Experience with some of the following devices:
    • Solid state, diode, or fiber lasers. 
    • High power monochrome and broadband LEDs. 
    • Photodetectors and / or photon counters. 
    • CCD / CMOS area scan and / or line scan cameras. 
    • Fiber-optic assemblies and alignment.

Desired skills

  • Any popular lens design software for optimization, tolerancing, and non-sequential analysis. 
  • Any modern programming language for data acquisition and signal and image processing. 
  • Good working knowledge of one or more of super-resolution microscopy techniques. 
  • Optical breadboard prototyping of reasonably complex assemblies. 
  • Fine alignment of optical components for light coupling and collimation, spatial filtering, structured illumination, image relaying, polarization control, beam scanning, and telecentricity. 
  • Experience in collaborative development with biochemistry and bioinformatics.
